DIY
DIY are three little letters that stand for “Do It Yourself”. This phrase might seem a bit blunt but refers to the activity of home improvement. Sometimes DIY is referred to as a fad or a hobby and is associated with people who carry out building and crafts activities for themselves.
The “DIY” term probably dates back to the 1960s when the first big stores selling tools and materials to the general public opened. This allowed ordinary people to buy the tools and materials that were hitherto only available to builder and craftsmen from builders’ merchants and some small hardware stores.
This led to a trend for people to carry out maintenance work and renovations on their homes for themselves. For the first time people did for themselves what they would have usually paid professional builders and craftsmen to do. People began to shape their home environment for themselves, so rather than everybody’s home complying with some sense of conformity, they began to take on a uniqueness that reflected the tastes of their owners.
Some might say that the work that these DIY enthusiasts did on their homes did more harm than good and undermined the skills and traditions of skilled workers, not to mention the suspect taste that people imposed on their homes.
Of course, the average DIY fanatic did not possess the skill of a professional and some of the work they carried out did indeed do some serious damage to their homes, but things have come a long way since the 1960s. There has been a collective movement of self education in all things DIY. Now, DIY can possess the same, if not better, quality than work carried out by a professional.
