Overseas Travel
Nothing is thought of travelling overseas these days, but in days gone by it was the preserve of the very rich or the armed forces. The means for overseas travel has advanced of course. This has been the jet age for some time and planes continuously come and go at the average city airport taking people to their holiday destination and bring them back again when their holiday is over. Some airports are dedicated to the carriage of people to holiday destinations.
Once, a trip to a destination in Europe was seen as very exotic but now it is within the reach of everybody. Those who want to experience something a little different now endeavour to travel of what are called long haul flights to the far east, the sub-continent, the Americas and Polynesia for example.
Even long-haul flights are within the reach of most people who want to make the effort to organise it. There are even package holidays for far flung destinations now. There seems to be very little left for the truly adventurous short of just getting on a plane and getting off wherever it lands.
There are more ways to travel than by aeroplane. The sea has always been the way this country has communicated and traded with the world beyond our shores. The days of the luxury liner are mostly in the past, though there is still one trans-Atlantic liner in operation, scheduled cruises are very popular and seen as a very civilised way to travel and encounter other cultures.
